Tap a piece to see where it can go, then tap the square (or drag the piece there). Checkmate the other king to win: put it in check with no way out.
Castle by moving your king two squares towards a rook. Pawns that reach the far side become a queen, rook, bishop or knight, your choice. It's a draw on stalemate, a position repeated three times, 50 moves with no capture or pawn move, or too few pieces left to mate.
About Chess
Chess with all the proper rules: castling, en passant, promotion to any piece, and draws by stalemate, repetition, the 50-move rule or too little material. Play the computer on Easy, Medium or Hard as White, Black or a random colour, or switch to With friends and send the 4-letter code to whoever's next to you. Your game against the computer saves as you go, so you can close the page mid-game and pick it up in the next lecture.
Tips
Control the centre early: pawns on e4 and d4 (or e5 and d5) give your pieces room.
Get your knights and bishops out before moving your queen around.
Castle early to tuck your king away, and check every capture: is that piece really free?
Questions
Can I play chess against the computer for free?
Yes. Pick Easy, Medium or Hard. Easy makes real mistakes, Hard looks several moves ahead. Take back a move if you slip, and your game saves in your browser.
How do I play chess online with a friend?
Press With friends at the top of the page and share the room code or link. Colours swap every game, and you can offer a draw or resign.
Does it know all the rules, like en passant?
Yes: castling, en passant, promotion (you choose the piece), and every kind of draw are all built in. Illegal moves simply aren't allowed.
